Biologically produced bio-ethanol is a valuable resource made from renewable raw materials, and is by nature a sustainable resource.

According to research published by the US Department of Energy, ethanol produced from corn generates about 1.34 times as much energy as it takes to make, and ethanol from feedstocks with a higher sugar content is likely to generate considerably more. Ethanol is a clean-burning fuel and thus helps to reduce air pollution. It is also expected to contribute decisively to greenhouse gas abatement.

The Alco Energy Rotterdam plant was constructed utilising the most modern technologies, making it one of the most sustainable bio-ethanol plants today.

Alco Energy Rotterdam recognises that bio-ethanol should be produced in a sustainable way. The European Commission has defined sustainability criteria in its 2008 draft Directive and Alco Energy Rotterdam is compliant with these criteria. It is important to note that the Belgian Government had already put forward certain of these criteria in the selection procedure to allocate quotas.
